Working for a Trigger: Cal Gates’ Journey from Newcastle to Sydney on foot in a single weekend

Cal Gates’ Journey from Newcastle to Sydney on foot in a single weekend

Within the face of adversity some individuals rise to the event with outstanding energy and dedication. Cal Gates is one such particular person. His story is considered one of inspiration, resilience, and a deep dedication to creating a distinction within the struggle towards blood cancer.

A Family’s Battle with Leukaemia

Leukaemia has left an indelible mark on Cal’s family. His wife, Tara, lost her mother to the disease when she was just three years old. The pain and impact of leukaemia has been a constant presence in their lives, affecting not only their family but also their friends. The loss and suffering caused by this relentless disease is profound and long-lasting.

Inspired by Love

Nine years ago, Cal witnessed an act of incredible bravery and selflessness. His wife, Tara, raised over $9,000 for blood cancer by shaving her head for the World’s Greatest Shave. Cal was deeply moved by her actions, describing the experience as truly inspiring.

Motivated by Tara’s courage, Cal wanted to find his own way to contribute to the fight against blood cancer. As an ultra-trail runner, Cal decided to channel his passion for running into a fundraiser that would push his limits and raise significant funds for research and support for those living with blood cancer.

The Blood Run

On June 2, 2022, Cal embarked on an extraordinary journey. He set out to run from Newcastle to Sydney along the Great North Walk (GNW) trail, a gruelling 250-kilometer route with over 10,000 meters of vertical gain. Cal estimated that the run would take approximately 60 hours to complete, requiring immense physical and mental endurance.

Cal’s goal was ambitious: to raise $100 for every kilometre of the GNW trail, totalling $25,000. The challenge would test his limits, bring him discomfort, and push him to his breaking point. Yet, as Cal noted, the pain he would endure during the run was nothing compared to the daily struggles faced by those battling blood cancer

A Milestone Achievement

Cal’s determination and resilience paid off. Recently, he surpassed $100,000 in funds raised, smashing his initial goal and providing vital support for blood cancer research. The overwhelming response from the community underscores the impact of Cal’s efforts and the importance of the cause.

Documenting the Journey

Cal and his brother, Mitch, created a feature-length documentary about this incredible run. Titled “The Blood Run,” the film captures the highs and lows of Cal’s journey, offering a poignant and inspiring look at his dedication to the cause. Watch the documentary.

Join the Fight

Cal’s story is a testament to the power of determination, love, and community support. His remarkable achievement shows the importance of standing together in the fight against blood cancer. If you’d like to contribute to this vital cause, consider donating to the Leukaemia Foundation and supporting ongoing research efforts.

Together, we can make a difference.
